Charles Eames once said, “Eventually everything connects—people, ideas, objects...the quality of the connections is the key to quality per se...I don't believe in this ‘gifted few’ concept, just in people doing things they are really interested in doing. They have a way of getting good at whatever it is.”
At Wight & Company, everything connects through interdisciplinary collaboration and discovery in a work environment that supports individual growth, facilitates conversation and results in innovative solutions. In these transformative times, we adapt quickly as change agents ready to lead the charge into an uncertain future. Continuous improvement is our mantra. We are always looking for new ways to uncover and capitalize on untapped potential, whether for ourselves or our clients.
Eames’ philosophy and approach gives us a model of inspiration and innovation—a highly collaborative studio to bring together the brightest thinkers and doers to generate “re-combinations” of disconnected ideas. With this as our starting point, we offer Wight.edu—continuing education programs structured around the concepts of learn, grow and share.
Learn
The first step is learning. This part of the program has two distinct approaches—formal professional training and informal collaborations with thought leaders in a wide range of competencies to broaden the context of our thinking and problem solving.
Grow
As an integrated architecture, engineering and construction firm, Wight focuses on cross-disciplinary interactions and training. Understanding fosters mutual respect and enhances efficiency, which we accomplish by rotating our young professionals through our different departments. An architectural intern may work on a jobsite, a structural engineer may be assigned to a transportation project, a project manager may learn cost estimating, or an engineering intern may spend time developing marketing proposals.
Additionally, focused training (e.g., IDP, Safety and OSHA Training) within disciplines accelerates professional growth and is instrumental in our continuous improvement efforts.
Our staff also is expected to take advantage of outside training to develop specific skills or expertise in areas such as energy modeling, BIM software and project accounting.
Share
Learning and growing benefit the individual, but sharing knowledge and unique experiences benefits everyone at Wight and all of our clients. Our corporate culture facilitates knowledge sharing and encourages everyone to strive for more—personally, professionally and collectively.
As active members of the architecture, engineering and construction industries, we are committed to mentoring our youngest professionals. It is our responsibility—to our profession and society at-large—to ensure the next generation has the skills and tools needed to meet the challenges of the future. This is why we developed Wight.edu’s SHARE program.
