Designing a flexible and modern educational environment at a neighborhood school for young learners.

Betsy Ross Elementary School
Forest Park School District 91
Forest Park, IL

Forest Park School District selected Wight & Company to provide design-build services for a renovation and addition to Betsy Ross Elementary School, originally built in 1926. The facility accommodates kindergarteners through second graders and was in need of flexible upgrades that would improve the way students learn and teachers teach. Working within a restricted site, we kept flexibility at the forefront of our design. We added a multipurpose room and two additional classrooms, both of which have areas for collaboration, stages for performances, and nooks and crannies for little readers. Accessibility was also enhanced by the addition of an elevator that allows access to a new rooftop garden. A new nature-scape area includes varied surfaces, textures, and plantings where students can participate in activities that engage gross motor skills and are more geared toward education and less toward non-structured recess activities.
