Collaborating in delivery of a much-needed community amenity for Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood.

Chinatown Library
Public Building Commission of Chicago
Chicago, IL

The Public Building Commission (PBC) of Chicago selected Wight & Company, in collaboration with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), to provide design-build services for the Chinatown Branch Library, a new civic, educational, and social hub for the neighborhood. Wight & Company provided design documentation and construction services for the new facility, which is set to become the symbolic heart of the Chinatown community. The Library features high-performance glass curtain walls that maximize visibility for both patrons and passers-by, and allows the exterior of the building to present the image of a glowing lantern at night. The interior includes a community meeting area, children's zone, and a connected atrium that references a traditional Chinese courtyard. The building features numerous sustainable elements and was designed and constructed to achieve LEED Gold status.
