Bringing a school back to life through a minimally disruptive renovation plan.

Greenbriar Elementary School
Northbrook School District 28
Northbrook, IL

Northbrook School District selected Wight & Company as their District Architect. Our first project was an addition and renovation to Greenbriar Elementary School. The project was phased to allow the school to remain in operation, with minimal disruption to students and teachers. A new gymnasium, shared with the Northbrook Park District, was added, as well as a new lobby, administrative area, and two new kindergarten classrooms. Ten years of life safety issues were resolved and sustainable design was integrated into the project through energy efficient systems, stormwater management, and daylight harvesting.

New Front Door

One of the challenges of the project was to create a new identity and front door for the school consistent with the surrounding context and the greater Northbrook community. The planned addition was formed to “reface” the front of the school and move the main entrance towards the exterior of the building. Architectural massing, details, and masonry elements were utilized to give the school a new image.
