Implementing a “school-within-a-school” design concept to address grade-specific needs at a community middle school.

James Hart School
Homewood School District 153
Homewood, IL

Homewood School District selected Wight & Company to provide design-build services for an addition and renovation to James Hart School, which serves students in the fifth and sixth grades. To provide for the disparate needs of students, we designed James Hart as a “school-within-a-school.”  There are separate academic wings for fifth and sixth grades, respectively, as well as separate cafeterias and separate circulation patterns. Each “school” has its own architecturally distinct entrance. Sustainable design principles were incorporated into this project and construction was phased to minimize disruption to school operations.
