Preserving and celebrating a town’s history and legacy through a sustainable “living museum.”

Naper Settlement
Naperville Heritage Society
Naperville, IL

The Naperville Heritage Society commissioned Wight & Company to incorporate a number of sustainable initiatives into Naper Settlement, a 12-acre outdoor museum in Naperville, Illinois. Many historic structures reside on the site, and the Settlement attracts visitors and groups from the broader Chicagoland area. We worked with the Naperville Heritage Society to refine a master plan and identify feasible projects for an initial phase of development. Green infrastructure was incorporated, including permeable pavers, rain gardens, bioswales, infiltration fields, and cisterns throughout Naper Settlement. We also provided site engineering, landscape architecture design, and construction services for infrastructure upgrades after the Society received significant grant funding for stormwater attenuation.

Scott's Block & Firehouse

Currently, we are working on Scott’s Block and Firehouse, a replica of an original downtown commercial block with a dance hall on the second story. Located on the Naper Settlement site, the 27,000 sf structure will house meeting and banquet facilities on the second story, while the first floor will contain 7,000 sf of interconnected exhibit spaces to triple the Settlement’s indoor exhibit space.

A 4,400 sf firehouse, at one edge of the block, will replicate an original downtown firehouse on the exterior, but the similarity would end there. A highly interactive and experiential tour is planned indoors featuring several aspects of the life of a firefighter, including a lifelike experience of being saved from a house fire.
