Combining efficiency and functionality in a high-performance training facility with new recruits’ health and fitness in mind.

Naval Station Great Lakes - Freedom Hall Physical Training Facility
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Midwest
Great Lakes, IL

The United States Department of the Navy commissioned Wight & Company to design the new Physical Training Facility at Freedom Hall. As part of the redesign of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, the only recruit training station for the US Navy, the massive facility can accommodate the flow of 1800 recruits, in groups of 88, during highly scheduled, rigorous forms of physical activity. Our award-winning design allows the Navy to provide exercise every day for every recruit for 60-90 minutes and includes four one-eighth mile, six-lane running tracks, six half-court basketball courts, two volleyball courts, and state-of-the-art weight room, and fitness center.
