South Block Development selected Wight & Company to perform construction management services for a 10-story mixed-use development in Chicago’s South Loop. The project includes two floors totaling 18,000 sf of retail space; eight floors of condominium units; and amenities such as an outdoor community space, a covered 260-car parking lot, and a 44,000 sf health club. The development also features a green roof.

Urban Construction

Located at 8th Ave and State Street in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood, the One Place Condominiums and South Loop Shops project presented our team with construction challenges unique to such an urban setting. The development is located next to active CTA tracks that serve three lines of the city’s train system. Work hours and crane operations were limited throughout construction, especially during rush hour. Flagmen were also required to be on the tracks at this time. Other urban construction considerations included deep foundations, sub-basements, and extensive water and earth retention strategies.
