The Public Building Commission (PBC) of Chicago commissioned design guidelines and a building program for the design of prototype branch libraries to be located throughout the city. The primary objectives were to establish standards for egalitarian representation of the library throughout the city; set standards for practical and economical means and methods of operation of the library facilities; and to incorporate sustainable design.
Three library prototypes were developed: Prototype A is a single-story public library branch of 16,000-18,000 sf; Prototype B is a single-story public library branch of 8,900 sf; and Prototype C is a two-story public library branch of 17,000 sf. Design guidelines include space programming, site design, building systems, interior design, and sustainable design criteria.
