Working with the community to realize a new library’s functional aesthetic.

Orland Park Public Library
Orland Park Public Library Board of Trustees
Orland Park, IL

This two-story, 96,000-sf library is located in a suburb southwest of Chicago. Early input with library staff, coupled with design presentations at community outreach meetings, assured public support for referendum funding.

The resulting building provides much needed space for various community activities in addition to library functions. The first floor houses the most intensive public functions: circulation; outreach and technical services; computer access; youth services; and public meeting rooms. The second floor houses more relaxed and contemplative functions: adult services, teen services, administrative offices, and study rooms.

A series of north facing clerestory windows above the second floor reading room bring in natural light for reading without exposing the stacks to direct sunlight. A natural stone fireplace and seating area add a zone of relaxation. The concrete structure is clad in brick and an aluminum and glass curtain wall.
