Transportation Highway Planning Manager

Wight & Company, an award-winning Architecture, Engineering and Construction Management firm, is seeking a Transportation Highway Planning Manager to split time between our Darien and Chicago locations! The candidate will manage projects and tasks and be responsible for quality, budget and schedule adherence. The candidate will also assist with the development of proposals and subsequent contracts including the strategic approach, level of effort and cost proposals.


  • Strategic planning; developing/growing Transportation group
  • Building/maintaining relationships with key client decision makers
  • Pursuit management; proposal preparation, including developing presentation and marketing materials
  • Provide ongoing guidance and technical advice to project team members
  • Collaborate with a multi-discipline team and with clients to assess and solve challenging transportation issues


  • Strong strategic planning skills with proven ability to develop and execute business plans.
  • 20+ years’ experience in Highway Planning
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and Illinois P.E. required
  • Excellent communication skills; Transparency required
  • Desire to lead and mentor staff on planning and design projects
  • Excellent working relationships with IDOT, ISTHA and county DOTs in Chicago region.
  • Strong experience and reputation for Phase I/II planning and design projects
  • Experience managing Phase I transportation projects processed as Categorical Exclusions, Environmental Assessments and/or Environmental Impact Statements
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, Geopak and Microsoft Office Suite required
  • Broad transportation and physical planning experience is preferred; inclusive off transit, highway, land use, bicycle and pedestrian, long range and economic planning projects
