The Eastside Athletic & Academic Addition (ESAA), completed in 2023 for New Trier High School, was the second phase of development on this historic campus following the 2017 Westside Academic Addition. The ESAA was built on the site of the old Gates Gymnasium replacing a memorable but outdated facility with a new complex of activity spaces serving a robust array of Kinetic Wellness and Athletic programs.
A new Competition Gym, seating approximately 2000 spectators, along with an Auxiliary Gym and Strength & Cardio Fitness Center sits on top of a Fieldhouse featuring a 6-lane 160 M track with a turf practice infield. Other attributes of this new center include a Climbing Adventure space, new classrooms for Kinetic Wellness/Health instruction, as well as general academic programs, instructor/coaches offices, Athletic Director suite, locker rooms, and spirit-wear shop. This new assembly of spaces is joined to the existing campus with a two-story “Canyon” atrium allowing an ample mixing space for competition intermissions as well as daily lunch periods served by a healthy-menu cafe.
This new addition completes an “eastside bookend” capturing the historic campus core between two modern expansions of this storied Winnetka landmark. Exterior expressions of both the new east and west projects blend seamlessly with the red brick and terra-cotta materials of the century-old facility, invoking both an honoring of the past and anticipation of the future.
