Join us for a behind the scenes tour of the IBEW Local 134 headquarters, led by Milica “Mimi” Stojsavlievic, project designer with Wight & Company. This project has been called “the Beacon of Bronzeville” and won two 2019 AIA NEI Design Awards for Distinguished Building and Divine Detail. The $25 million project, of approximately 70,000 square feet includes a 48,000 square foot renovation of a former 1960’s era Chicago Public Elementary School, into the administrative offices for Local 134. An adjacent 22,000 square foot addition houses the 1,000 seat union hall and lobby.

During the tour, Ms. Stojsavlievic will discuss the challenges of retro-fitting an Elementary School into a state-of-the-art facility for the members of Local 134, while also creating a project that enhances the bond to the Bronzeville community. The tour will also cover how the design team decided to honor the history and future of the strong brotherhood and sisterhood of the IBEW, a concept critical to Local 134. Design and construction challenges such as low- floor to ceiling height and integrating creative interstitial spaces to run new infrastructure as well as re-using structure and re-cladding the exterior will be addressed by the engineering design team of record. The tour will also inform attendees on the precedent this facility will set for future trades people and future development of the surrounding community.

Following the tour will be an electrical engineering panel discussion. This is the first of a series of discussions with engineers and consultants. A chance for them to educate us. While we all took some basic engineering courses in college, we almost always delegate this work to our consulting engineers. We often do not have the time to keep up with the trends, new products, and codes related to the engineering disciplines we work with. Join us as we learn from our electrical engineers about what is changing in their discipline and how we can work better with them.

Join us for just the tour, the panel discussion or both! Free on-site parking is available.
