After working with the Tri-State Fire Protection District (District) on several projects as Construction Manager, including the addition, renovation, and training tower at Station 121, an external stair lift closure addition at Station 123, and an apparatus bay renovation at Station 124, Wight partnered with the District again to carry out a facility assessment, space needs analysis, programming, and planning study for all 4 stations in their district. This Master Plan reviewed the existing conditions of stations holistically to assist with and provide a guideline for capital budget planning and execution over the next several years. Wight guided the District in understanding all existing conditions, NFPA, OSHA, and FEMA standards, and station design best practices, as well as prioritizing their goals to achieve current standards for their existing stations.

Elements of biophilia woven into the design

Natural daylighting and tunable artificial lighting to support a healthy circadian rhythm Adaptive reuse of existing bay support space to provide transitional decontamination, bay laundry, and PPE storage spaces to allow for NFPA processes to be carried out in all stations
Individual bunks and lockers allow for future flexibility, better space efficiency, and support staff recruitment and retention efforts
Removing all fitness spaces from hot zone apparatus bay floors and providing a dedicated, right sized space for required fitness programs
Removing the turn out gear lockers from bay to allow for required exhaust/ventilation, protect PPE from UV degradation, and reduce cross contamination
Reduce response times by removing all gear and equipment storage from the apparatus bay and providing separate storage rooms
