Herrick Middle School has long been a cornerstone of the District 58 community, serving students since its original construction in 1953. Over the decades, the building has evolved through multiple additions, reflecting changing educational needs and enrollment growth.

As part of the community supported referendum in November 2022, Herrick has undergone one of the most comprehensive transformations in its history. Construction began in March 2024 and was substantially completed by December 2025. The scope of work is designed not only to modernize the building, but to support a significant educational shift: beginning in the 2026–2027 school year, Herrick will serve students in grades 6–8, creating a true middle school model. Funded through the voter approved referendum, the $53.62 million investment represents a significant commitment to the long term educational, safety, and facility needs of District 58 students and the broader community.

This transition frees up space across all 11 elementary schools while providing sixth graders access to specialized spaces and expanded programming typically found in middle schools. To support this change, the project includes the addition of new classrooms and science labs specifically designed for sixth grade learners.

Safety and security are central to the transformation of Herrick Middle School. The project introduces secure entry vestibules with controlled access, reinforcing a welcoming yet protected environment for students and staff. Infrastructure and life safety improvements also include new fire alarm systems, clocks, PA and intercom systems, ADA signage, improved doors and hardware, and extensive plumbing and electrical repairs. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are being modernized, with air conditioning added throughout the building to improve comfort and air quality.

Beyond systems, Herrick is being reimagined as a collaborative learning environment. Expanded and remodeled cafeterias, kitchen additions, library improvements, consolidation of student support spaces, and new collaboration areas reflect the district’s commitment to flexible, student centered design.

The improvements as Herrick Middle School stand as a modern, secure, and welcoming environment, one that honors its legacy while supporting the evolving needs of District 58 students.
