Originally built in 1957, O’Neill Middle School has served generations of District 58 students and has been expanded several times to meet the needs of a growing community. These additions tell a story of adaptation, one that continues today through the district’s long term facilities initiative.

As part of the community supported referendum in November 2022, O’Neill has undergone one of the most comprehensive transformations in its history. O’Neill’s current transformation began in March 2024 and was substantially completed by December 2025. With construction complete following a $43.94 million investment, O’Neill Middle School will continue its tradition of excellence, reimagined to serve today’s students and tomorrow’s needs. O’Neill will transition from serving grades 7–8 to grades 6–8 beginning with the 2026–2027 school year. This shift frees up space in the elementary schools while enhancing the middle school experience for younger learners.

Safety and security are central to the transformation of O’Neill Middle School. The project introduces secure entry vestibules with controlled access, reinforcing a welcoming yet protected environment for students and staff. Infrastructure and life safety improvements also include new fire alarm systems, clocks, PA and intercom systems, ADA signage, improved doors and hardware, and extensive plumbing and electrical repairs. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are being modernized, with air conditioning added throughout the building to improve comfort and air quality to the school to create healthier, more comfortable learning environments.

Educationally driven improvements are equally important. Additional classrooms and science labs are being incorporated to support sixth grade instruction, while staff and student support spaces are being consolidated to improve efficiency and collaboration. Expanded and remodeled cafeterias, kitchen additions, improved library spaces, and new collaboration areas reinforce the school’s role as a dynamic learning hub.

These enhancements reflect priorities voiced by the community: flexibility, safety, sustainability, and timeless design. With construction complete, O’Neill Middle School will continue its tradition of excellence, reimagined to serve today’s students and tomorrow’s needs.
